Notes - George T. Corbin was a renowned mountain man of Nicholson Hollow, near Nethers, Virginia, where he was born in 1888. His father, Madison Corbin, owned a fifty-acre tract of land there. In 1911, when his first wife died, George moved out of his father's house and built the home that would later become known as the Corbin Cabin. The hand-hewn structure was the birthplace of all four children from his second marriage. Corbin was known as a man of the mountains, working in the tan bark industry, farming his own crops, and for a time, engaged in moonshining.
The Corbin family, along with others in the area, were forcibly displaced in 1938 when the land was incorporated into Shenandoah National Park. Corbin received only $500 for his five acres and home, which he used to repay a loan for a new metal roof he had already put on the cabin, just before he was forced out of it. Corbin Cabin itself is a chestnut log cabin that was lovingly restored in 1954 by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC). It is one of the few remaining intact log houses in the park and is available for rent as a primitive hikers' shelter through the PATC, requiring a hike-in 1.5 miles.
While George resented the unfair displacement, he later admitted the move ultimately provided his children, including his oldest son, an ordained minister, with better opportunities. Corbin was living in Ida, Virginia, when the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club dedicated his renovated cabin in 1954. He later moved to Falls Church, Virginia,
