TELLS OF ANCESTORS OF WM. HAMPTON BROWN Sperryville, Va„ April 27, 1927. To the Editor ol The Virginia Star: As so much is being written about Andrew Hampton Brown -it is well to say something of his ancestors and relatives. - Andrew Hampton Brown, bom on November 17, 1831; Susan Virginia Brown, bom March 1, 1843, and James Marshall Brown, bom February 6, 1831, are the oldest direct descendants in this vicinity of Captain Daniel Brown and his wife, Elizabeth Hill. (Her mother was a Miss Wood and grand mother a Miss Towles.) In Green's "Notes on Culpeper" it is stated that Wm. Brown, eldest son of Captain Daniel Brown, married Miss Griffin. This is a mistake, he married Lucy White, a sister of Susannah White Broaddus, Peggy White Allen and aunt of Elizabeth White, who married Willis Browning. Andrew Hampton, Jaihes Marshall and Susan Virginia Brown, all remember their grandmother, Lucy White Brown, as they were 18, 10 and 8 years old, respectively, when she died, and Andrew Hampton remembers his grandfather, William Brown, as he was 10 years when he died. Andrew Hampton remembers their uncle and aunt, Armistead and Mary Ann Russell Meredith Brown. Wm. Meredith, brother of Mary Ann Russell Meredith Brown, taught Him the cabinet making trade.
James Marshall Brown learned nis trade with William Armstrong, who married their cousin, Catherine Slaughter, daughter of Wm. Slaughter and his wife, Francis Brown, daughter of Captain Daniel Brown and sister of Wm. Brown, the grandfather of Andrew Hampton, James Marshall and Susan Virginia Brown. Captain Daniel Brown, of the Revolutionary War and Capt. Wm. Brown, of the French and Indian War, were brothers. William White Brown, son of Wm. and Lucy White Brown, married Juriah Yager, and were father and mother of Andrew Hampton and Susan Virginia Brown. George Brown, son of Wm. and Lucy White Brown, married Mary Goodloe Yates, daughter of Paul and Nancy Durrette Yates, and were father and mother of Henry Durrette, James Marshall, Wm. Waller and Paul Conler Brown. Henry D. Brown married his cousin, lusan Virginia Brown; J^es Marhall Brown married Mary (MolUe) 'lorence Ryan, Wm. Waller was berothed to his cousin, Ann Pendleton, , daughter of Lucy Slaughter, whose aother was Frances Brown, stater of m. Brown; and Washington Pendleon, but died before they were man-led. >aul Conner married Mary irown, daughter of Pressley and Ann White
Brown married Juriah Yager, George married Mary Goodloe Yates, Pressley Brown married Ann Popham, and Frances married Hiram Popham and went to Kentucky. Margaret, James and Mordlca were never married. Andrew Hampton Brown, on his mother's side of the family, was descended from Nicholas Yager, the Revolutionary soldier, and from Anna Hurt, who married Acrey Berry. A daughter of Jemima Berry married Jeremiah Yager, and their daughter, Juriah, the mother of Andrew Hampton and Susan Virginia, married Wm. White Brown. From "Green's "Notes on Culpeper" it will be found that Andrew Hampton and all the descendants of Wm. and Lucy White Brown are connected by blood to the best of the families of America. Besides those mentioned I will name a few more: Winston, Meade, Thompson, Burgess, Micou, Roberts, Taliaferro, Dudley, Buckner, Bryan, Long, Stevenson, Tutt, Walker, Wingfield, Boulware, Stuart, Winston, WoodvUle, Yancey, Menefee, Clayton. Zackory Smith was a first cousin to Andrew Hampton Brown's mother. Captain Benjamin Lillard, the Revolutionary soldier, married Lucy Brown, a daughter of Captain Daniel Brown and sister of Wm. Brown, who married Lucy White, and also brother of Frances Brown Slaughter, Armstead, who married Mary Ann Russell Meredith, Thomas Coleman, Daniel Russell, and Mary Ann Newman. Captain Daniel and Captain Wm. Brown were of the number who protested and signed against the "Stamp Act" and "Taxation Without Representation." Andrew Hampton Brown married a Miss Lillard and she, as well as he, are of the Bryan Lillard connections. -SUBSCRIBER
