William Edgar Coates, prominent retired farmer and mail carrier of Duet, died Saturday morning at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Billie Brown, at Boston, where he had been making his home since his illness some months ago. Funeral services for Mr. Coates were held Monday afternoon from the*- Etlan Methodist Church where an unusually large number of friends and relatives attended. The display of the floral arrangement attested to the kyve and esteem of one that was greatly loved. The Rev. T. A. Graves and Rev. E. E. Henley were the officiating ministers, with burial in the family section of the church cemetery. Members of the church choir rendered several song selections. Mr. Coates, 80 years of age, was the son of the late James Coates and the late Mrs. Kate Lillard Coates, of Madison. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Aubrey Blankenbaker and from this marriage three daughters survive, Mrs. Naomi Southard, Etlan; Mrs. Fannie Carpenter, Haywood; Mrs. Vera Tanner, Haywood; and three sons, Ebert Coates, Etlan; Ray Coates, Haywood, and Elmer Coates, Brandy. After the death of his first wife he later married Miss Lucy Covington, now deceased, and from this markage he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Billie Brown, Boston; MrsJ Freeman Peregoy, Orange; Mrs. Gordon Thornhill, Boston, and nine sons, Robert H., Joseph M., Charlie R., and William C., all of Culpeper, also John Coates, Culpeper; James E. Brightwood;. Hugh R., Haywood; Delma, Brightwood and Paul E. of Etlan.
Active pallbearers were Herbert Carpenter, Robert Covington, Claude Southard, Ross Coates, Thomas Carpenter, Charlie Southard, Franklin Tanner and John Edwin Coates. Among those carrying the profusion of beautiful floral tributes were Stonewall Kilby, C. Thornhill, Edwin Gordon, Russell Newman, G. W. Leathers, John J. White, Cecil Coppege, Billie Blankenbaker, Champ Blankenbaker, Frank Smith, D. E. Yowell, John Gallihugh, Tom Lilliard, Andrew Newman, Stanley Blankenbaker, Roy Aylor, C. P. Humphries, Charlie Petty, C. F. Yates, Page Carpenter, Irvin Sullivan, John W. Aylor, Will Corbin, E. Y. Weaver, Charlie Weaver and Edwin Yowell and others.
